Opening a Demat Account: A Step-by-Step Practical Guide

You have decided to invest in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, REITs, InvITs etc. Now comes the practical question: how do you actually gain access to these instruments? Setting up an account is far faster and simpler than most beginners assume.

Which Account Do You Need for Which Product?

Product / Account Required
ProductAccount Required
Mutual FundsDemat account (optional) or direct folio with the Asset Management Company (AMC)
Stocks/EquitiesDemat + Trading account with a SEBI-registered broker
Bonds / Non-Convertible Debentures (NCDs)Demat account (same account used for stocks/equities)
REITs / InvITsDemat account (same one used for stocks/equities)
Government Securities (G-Secs)Demat account, or a dedicated RBI Retail Direct Gilt account

Many prospective investors delay opening an account because they assume it requires cumbersome physical paperwork, physical photocopies, and tedious branch visits. In reality, modern digital onboarding takes less than a few minutes.

What You'll Need

Have the following items ready before beginning:

  • Permanent Account Number (PAN) details
  • Active mobile number linked to Aadhaar (for OTP-based e-Sign).
  • Active bank account details (account number and IFSC code)
  • A smartphone or computer with a functional camera for video verification

The Step-by-Step Onboarding Process

Step 1: Submit Basic Contact Details

Download the official app or visit the website of a SEBI-registered stockbroker. Enter your basic details, PAN, mobile number, and email address. Verify your contact credentials via One-Time Password (OTP).

Step 2: Complete Online KYC Verification

Electronic KYC (e-KYC) verifies investor identity to prevent unauthorized account creation. Enter your Aadhaar number to receive an authentication OTP on your linked mobile device. Once verified, your demographic details populate automatically without physical documentation.

Step 3: Complete Video In-Person Verification (VIPV)

To prevent identity theft and fraud, SEBI mandates in-person verification. Modern platforms accomplish this seamlessly via a brief video check: capture a live selfie or record a short video clip holding your PAN card while reading a dynamic security code displayed on screen.

Step 4: Link Your Bank Account

Input your bank account number and IFSC code. The broker verifies account ownership (often via an automated penny-drop verification), ensuring that all investment deposits and redemption proceeds link directly to your verified bank account.

Step 5: Register Nominee Details

Designate a nominee (typically a spouse, child, parent, or trusted family member) and submit their identification details. Registering a nominee is a vital safeguard that ensures seamless transmission of assets to your beneficiaries in the event of an untimely demise.

Step 6: Account Activation and Distinction of Folios

Upon verification, your Demat Account (which electronically holds your securities, much like a bank account holds cash) and Trading Account (the transactional portal used to execute buy and sell orders) become fully operational.

Note on Mutual Fund Folios: When investing in mutual funds directly with an AMC, your holdings are tracked via a unique Folio Number. Investors can choose whether to hold mutual fund units in dematerialized form within a demat account or in statement-of-account format under an AMC folio.
